The Lonely Business of Being Dead 1

Partly inspired by the works of Mark Rothko and Anotion Tapies, this work is a continuation of the artist’s Masters studies. It is one of two similar works which work either a diptych or as single pieces. The compositional arrangement is simple. The background is formed of a heavily built-up and varied texture varying in tone and hue from the bottom of the work to the top, reminiscent of a deep ocean. This reading is disturbed by the textural build-up which emphasises the surface and denies a special reading. Emerging from this are three elements: a white bar along the top of the work, a small portrait photograph in a cocoon of white paint and crack filler, and a thin string rising up from it towards, but never touching, the white bar. The tension of the work arises from the failed connection, and the simultaneous emergence of the foreground forms and their submission into the more dominant background. The work invites the viewer to contemplate this tension.
