Three of a Kind
I was commissioned to do this piece in May by Gareth. His brief is that he'd like a family portrait. The portrait wasn't to be too recognizable and quite abstract: more of an expression of the family than an actual representation. In this, I was quite lucky. I was given a photo of the three of them that echoed everything I knew about them. Gareth, in the background, is an imposing and all-encompassing figure, with his arms around both Nicky and Ethan (their baby). Ethan stares out with single-minded focus on his mom and Nicky looking straight ahead, smiling but with a head full of thoughts. I reworked that theme, those ideas, and abstracted the core elements to just the base impressions.
